Attorney Profiles


            ERIC NIELSEN

 

Eric was born and raised in Seattle.  He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the Evergreen State College and graduated Cum Laude from Seattle University School of Law in 1982.  After graduating from law school, Eric was a judicial law clerk and then went to work for a large Seattle public defender firm as a trial attorney.  In 1985, Eric joined a public defender appellate firm and eventually became the firm’s Assistant Director.   In 1994, Eric founded Nielsen, Broman & Koch.  Eric has litigated hundreds of civil and criminal appeals, which have resulted in over 200 published Court of Appeals and Washington State Supreme Court decisions.  Eric is also legal counsel for the Quinault Indian Nation, Associate Judge of the Nisqually Tribal Court and an appellate judge with the Northwest Indian Tribal Court System.  Eric has consistently been recognized as one of Washington’s best appellate lawyers by Washington Law and Politics magazine and has spoken at a number of CLE’s on appellate practice and Indian law issues.  Eric is a member of the Washington Appellate Lawyers Association and qualified by the Washington State Supreme Court to handle capital appeals. 


            ERIC BROMAN

Eric has been handling appeals for Washington clients since 1988 and has been a partner with the firm since 1997. He is counsel of record in over 150 published appellate decisions and has handled hundreds of criminal and civil appeals in Washington courts. Eric received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Florida.  Consistently named one of Washington's best lawyers by Washington Law & Politics magazine, Eric is a frequent speaker on appellate practice and a committed advocate for ensuring access to justice for all litigants. Eric has served on the Washington Bar Court Rules and Procedures Committee and is a founding member of the Washington Appellate Lawyers Association.  He is licensed in Washington and is a member of the United States Supreme Court Bar.  Eric is also qualified by the Washington State Supreme Court to handle capital appeals.  Eric is available for consultation and referrals.


            DAVID KOCH

David earned his Bachelor's Degree in Journalism at the University of Missouri and his law degree at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.  Beginning in 1992, he served as Assistant Public Defender with the Alaska Public Defender Agency in Anchorage, Alaska.  Following his tenure at the Agency, David specialized in civil litigation with a prominent Seattle law firm.  David joined Nielsen, Broman & Koch, PLLC in 1995 and became a partner in 2001. 

David has appeared in more than 600 civil and criminal appeals, ranging from medical malpractice, to disability discrimination, to serious felony offenses.  He was the subject of a Seattle Times article discussing his successes in a series of high profile cases, he is a perennial selection by Washington Law & Politics magazine as one of the state's best appellate lawyers, and he is AV rated (highest levels of skill and integrity) by Martindale-Hubbell.  David is licensed to practice in the state and federal courts of Washington and is a member of the United States Supreme Court Bar.  He lectures and publishes on appellate matters and has been honored for his pro bono activities. 

David is passionate about ensuring the selection and retention of qualified judges.  He served as Co-chair of the King County Bar Association’s Judicial Evaluation and Judicial Screening Committees. 


CHRISTOPHER GIBSON

 

Chris graduated from The Evergreen State College in 1982 with a B.S. in Marine Science. After a ten-year career establishing and developing commercial fish farming operations on the west coast of the United States and Canada, Chris turned to the law, graduating Cum Laude from Seattle University School of Law in 1995.  After graduation, Chris joined Nielsen, Broman & Koch, and is currently a supervising attorney.  As a supervising attorney, Chris oversees and edits the work of several other experienced appellate attorneys.  During his tenure with the firm, Chris has appeared in over 650 civil and criminal appeals resulting in over 70 published decisions.

           

            
DANA LIND

 

Dana earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from the University of Washington in 1992 and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Seattle University School of Law in 1998 before joining the firm.  Dana has handled or supervised more than 250 civil and criminal appeals, many involving serious felony offenses.  She has argued in the Washington Supreme Court on more than a dozen occasions, and was selected as a Rising Star in 2004 by Washington Law & Politics magazine.     

            

            JENNIFER WINKLER

 

            Jennifer graduated Cum Laude from Northwestern University with a Bachelor's Degree in Hispanic Studies.  Jennifer earned her law degree from the University of Washington.  She clerked for Judge Chris Quinn-Brintnall in the Washington State Court of Appeals in Tacoma before joining Nielsen, Broman, & Koch, PLLC in 2005.  Since then, Jennifer has appeared in numerous criminal and civil appeals.  In addition to her appellate work, Jennifer is a volunteer with the King County Bar Association’s community legal clinics, providing advice to Spanish-speaking clients with a host of legal issues. 


            ANDREW ZINNER

 

 Andrew earned his Master’s Degree in Journalism and law degree from Southern Illinois University.   Since becoming an attorney in 1986, Andrew has dedicated himself primarily to defending indigent individuals charged with and convicted of serious felony offenses.  Licensed in Illinois, Washington and Arizona, Andrew has represented hundreds of criminal appellants in intermediate appellate and state supreme courts.  He also served as a trial public defender in Illinois, Washington, and Arizona.  Andrew was a death penalty staff attorney in the Arizona Superior Court system as well as a staff attorney in the Arizona and Washington Court of Appeals.  He has been with Nielsen Broman & Koch since 2005. 



            CASEY GRANNIS

 

            Casey graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor's Degree in English.   He earned his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2003.   He then worked at Legal Services for the Elderly in Queens, New York, defending indigent seniors facing eviction in housing court.  Upon moving to Washington, Casey handled numerous criminal and civil appeals as a contract attorney for Nielsen, Broman & Koch before joining the firm in 2007.

            

            JENNIFER SWEIGERT

 

Jennifer earned her Bachelor’s Degree in French from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon.  She also holds a Master in Teaching Degree from Seattle University and spent six years as a high-school French teacher.  She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Seattle University School of Law in 2006, where she was one of two members of the graduating class to receive the Faculty Scholar Award for academic excellence and significant contributions to the law school community.  She also won awards for legal writing and appellate advocacy and was on the editorial staff of the Seattle Journal for Social Justice.  Prior to joining Nielsen, Broman & Koch in 2008, Jennifer worked on numerous criminal appeals as a contract attorney and clerked for Justice Tom Chambers at the Washington Supreme Court.



            K. CAROLYN RAMAMURTI

 

            A Seattle native, K. Carolyn Ramamurti attended the University of Washington before earning a degree in English from Oberlin College in 1985.  Carolyn graduated from Hastings College of the Law in 1988.  She was admitted to the California Bar in 1988.  Carolyn worked for the Santa Clara County Public Defender’s Office from 1989 through 1992, handling misdemeanors, felony trials, preliminary hearings in felony cases and habeas corpus writs.  After returning to Seattle in 1992, Carolyn worked for Associated Counsel of the Accused before founding the firm Kolker & Ramamurti in 1994.  Since 1994, her practice has focused on criminal defense and family law, including representation in high profile criminal cases.  Carolyn became of counsel at Nielsen, Broman & Koch in 2004.  She is a member of both the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and Washington Defenders Association.  Carolyn’s practice continues to emphasize representation in criminal cases at the trial court level and family law.

           

            
JARED STEED


            Jared graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in 2005, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and History.  In 2008, he graduated from William Mitchell College of Law, where he was a member of the Rosalie Wahl Moot Court Competition Team.  Jared worked as a Law Clerk for Nielsen, Broman & Koch during law school.  During this time, he participated in the appeal process of clients convicted of a variety of offenses including burglary, assault, criminal sexual conduct, and forgery.  Jared has also worked on family law matters including dissolution of marriage, child support and custody modification, and prenuptial agreements.  Jared has joined Nielsen, Broman & Koch, of counsel, and will continue to concentrate his practice in the areas of criminal defense and family law.
